Living off the Coast

Norway, with its long coastline, has always had a close connection to the sea, shaping both its culture and history for centuries. The coast has been a lifeline for fisheries, trade, transport, tourism, and aquaculture, forming the foundation of the economy and livelihoods for those who have lived there.

Today’s aquaculture industry builds on a long history tied to fishing and the sea as a way of life. The early pioneers of aquaculture faced scepticism and resistance while laying the groundwork for an industry that is now vital to Norway through value creation, jobs, and livelihoods – contributing to the welfare of the entire nation.

In this film, Arthur Marøy from Nordhordland, and Åsta and Rolv Haugarvoll from Hardanger, tell the story of the beginning of salmon farming on their respective sides of the west coast.
