Algal Blooms
When algae multiply rapidly and become highly concentrated, it results in an algal bloom. This often occurs under favourable conditions, such as high nutrient levels and abundant sunlight.
Algae are a natural part of the marine environment, but large blooms can disrupt ecosystems. As algae die and decompose, oxygen levels in the water may drop, causing problems for fish and other marine life. Some algae also produce toxins that can be harmful to both animals and humans.
Understanding algal blooms is key to protecting the environment and aquaculture from potential negative effects.
