Keeping the Coast Clean
A clean coast and a healthy ocean are essential for life in and around the sea. In 2020, it was estimated that over 230 million tons of waste were floating in the world's oceans, with a staggering 90% being plastic. In Norwegian waters alone, around 36,000 tons of waste are dumped each year. About 70% sinks to the seabed, 15% drifts in ocean currents and accumulates in large garbage patches, while only 15% washes ashore.
Plastic pollution poses a serious threat to marine life. Each year, more than 100,000 marine mammals die due to waste in the ocean.
That is why we must do everything we can to prevent pollution and keep our coastline clean. Lingalaks actively participates in cleanup efforts every year, using boats, cranes, employees, and the necessary equipment. In Nordhordland, NGIR organizes the annual “Spring Cleanup Day” in March and “Coastal Cleanup Week” in September, where individuals, groups, and organizations remove litter from beaches, rivers, islets, and trails. In addition to cleanup efforts, prevention is key. We focus strongly on reuse, recycling, and strict waste sorting requirements for plastic and other materials.
Our goal is clear: Minimize waste and maximize reuse.
