Ocean currents

The most well-known ocean current is the Atlantic Current, which is a continuation of the Gulf Stream. It carries warm water from the Atlantic Ocean northward along the coast of Norway, having a significant impact on the climate. The current gives Norway a milder climate than other areas at the same latitude, making the winters milder and contributing to a rich and diverse natural environment along the coast.

In addition to the warm Atlantic Current, there are cold, northward coastal currents. These currents play an important role in distributing nutrients in the sea, creating favourable conditions for fish populations and other marine life. Usually, it is only this coastal water that enters our fjords.

The coastal and ocean currents are crucial for both the climate, the environment, and the biological diversity of the sea.
